Spain continues to be the number one tourist destination in Europe and in recent years the number of people who have opted for some form of touring vacation, using a locally hired car, has increased considerably. This is possibly due to the fact that in the South, along the coastline, lays an almost unbroken landscape of small tourist centres, along a first class coast road which stretches all the way from the Costa Blanca in the east to the borders or Portugal in the west.
Although much of Spain’s tourist industry remains concentrated along the southern coastline, there are some very attractive spots to be found a little further inland, including the cosmopolitan cities of Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid is the capital city of Spain, and is renowned for the excellent quality of life its inhabitants enjoy. Madrid is an intriguing city, part historical and cultural extravaganza, part modern urban centre, definitely a city with a wealth of interesting options for visitors to pursue. Madrid is served by Madrid Barajas International Airport, which is the major air transport hub of the Iberian Peninsula. If Madrid is a city defined by air traffic, then Barcelona is the equivalent city although based around the shipping industry. One of the busiest sea ports in the Mediterranean, Barcelona has a huge mix of style, from quant almost fishing village like areas to hedonistic modern nightlife zones. For those who arrive by air, Barcelona International Airport serves a full international schedule, along with domestic routes. A full range of International and European care hire companies operate throughout Spain, including Avis, Hertz, Sixt and Europacar.
